Young Karl: Disney tells the story of 'Becoming Karl Lagerfeld'
Disney+ has released a mini-series on the beginnings of German fashion giant Karl Lagerfeld. The designer, who worked with the greatest models, died in 2019.
Actor Daniel Brühl plays the title role in 'Becoming Karl Lagerfeld'. His great rival Yves Saint Laurent is played by Arnaud Valois.
The six-episode series focuses on the 1970s when the designer made a name for himself in the fashion world.
Describing himself as a 'fashion mercenary', Lagerfeld was a gifted polyglot. He worked in several houses, such as Chloé and the Italian brand Fendi.
The designer then fell madly in love with the Parisian dandy Jacques de Bascher (a role by Théodore Pellerin). The rivalry for the young man cost him his friendship with Yves Saint Laurent.
Daniel Brühl told Vanity Fair France that he had studied the young Lagerfeld. He described him as an "enigmatic", "multi-faceted" character. "He created armor to protect himself," Brühl said. "What interested me most was discovering the solitary Karl."
According to Brühl, Lagerfeld was "a character full of paradoxes and someone who reflects the ambiguity of life", immersed in the world of fashion and nightlife, but "happier in intellectual circles than in these imaginary worlds he had created obsessively, almost like fairy tales."
"Who was he really intimate with in the end? With Jacques de Bascher, the only love of his life, and his mother too, Elisabeth Lagerfeld," said the German actor. "He had fallen in love with a young man, like something straight out of a Proust novel."
"The competition with Yves Saint Laurent was also exciting to play. Because there was love and hatred, respect, but also jealousy," says Daniel Brühl.
Will the mini-series live up to the status of the immense creator? Will it shed a different light on the world of Parisian fashion? Have a look at the show on Disney+!
