Who is J-Hope?

Known as one of the members of South Korea’s most famous boybands, BTS, J-Hope is not only a K-pop star but also a rapper, dancer, singer-songwriter, and record producer.

Early life

J-Hope was born Jung Ho-seok on February 18, 1994, in the Gwangju District of South Korea. Before being known as a member of BTS, J-Hope was part of a dance team.

Danced his way in

Dispatch reports that J-Hope had been part of an underground dance team and was taking dance classes for six years. It was through dance that he realised a passion for singing, and he auditioned to be a trainee and Billboard reports he eventually passed auditions with Big Hit Entertainment.

Becoming part of BTS

While in Big Hit Entertainment, J-Hope eventually became selected to be part of BTS and debuted with the rest of the BTS members in 2013, reports The Daily Dot, and the rest is history.

Solo career

Other than being part of BTS, J-Hope has established himself as a solo artist outside of his band. As a solo artist, he has come out with several music releases which have become very successful in their own right.

Collabs with international artists

Some of J-Hope’s solo songs included collaborations with fellow big name international artists, such as with American singer Becky G in ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’, and ‘On the Street’ with American rapper J. Cole, reports E! News and Billboard.

Military service and return

After serving his necessary military service, which began on April 18, 2023, J-Hope was freed from duty on October 17, 2024, and his discharge has been celebrated by many fans, including his fellow BTS bandmate Jin, who was also discharged recently, according to 8days.

Fans charting ‘On the Street’ back up

According to Forbes, BTS fans have been streaming J-Hope’s ‘On the Street’ to celebrate his return, and this has led to his song being back up on the music charts. However, Billboard reports that the song was unable to beat the record of Jin’s ‘Super Tuna’, which was also being streamed by BTS fans at the same time.

New music and a tour in the US

Pinkvilla reported that the star jetted off to Los Angeles on October 27 for his first overseas scheduled work trip since his military enlistment. The product of that trip is now here: a single with American rapper Don Toliver featuring Pharrell Williams: 'LV Bag'. In addition, the Korea Herald reports, J-Hope will also release a solo set in the next weeks, right before he goes on a tour to the United States and Asia. He will perform in six American cities, including Dallas, Atlanta, and New York, before touring eight cities in Asia.
