Actor 'still struggles to make a living' after 30 years in Hollywood, 2 Oscar nominations

As in the real world, all that glitters in Hollywood is not gold, and actor Djimon Honsou has once again shown one of the reasons why.

The actor began his career in Hollywood in 1990, but in 1997, with his role as Cinque in Steven Spielberg's ‘Amistad’, he rose to fame.

From there, Djimon Honsou has gone on to string together hits such as ‘Gladiator’ (2000), ‘Constantine’ (2005), ‘Blood Diamond’ (2006) and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014).

In fact, in 2024 alone, the actor appeared in ‘Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver’, ‘Gladiator 2’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’. In other words, he maintains his career and his star status to this day.

And yet he has confirmed that he is ‘very poorly paid’, in an interview for CNN's ‘African Voices Changemakers’.

Djimon Honsou says that despite a consistently impressive filmography, including two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor for ‘In America’ (2004) and ‘Blood Diamond’ (2007), his financial situation is not the best.

"I've been in this business for over two decades, and still two Oscar nominations and been in many big blockbuster films, and yet I'm still  financially struggling to make a living," he says.

In fact, this is not the first time Djimon Honsou has complained about his pay, as he did so in 2023, in an interview with ‘The Guardian’.

"I feel cheated, tremendously cheated, in terms of finances and in terms of the workload as well," he told the newspaper.

Incidentally, despite his two Oscar nominations, the actor claims that racism prevented him from getting one more, which would have come in 1997, for his role in ‘Amistad’.

"I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars, talking about the fact that they thought that I had just came off the boat and off the streets," he recalls.

"This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism doesn't change like that anytime soon," he says.
