'Emilia Pérez' left without Karla Sofía Gascón: Netflix turns its back on her
Netflix has decided to cancel Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón for the promotion of the film 'Emilia Pérez' in the United States, even though she is on the road to the Oscars as one of its nominees.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platform is distancing itself from the actress after her posts about Muslims and George Floyd went viral last week and she was deemed racist.
This is despite the fact that Gascón's tweets were made in 2020 and 2021, in which he said that Islam is an “infection for humanity” and described the migration of Muslims in Spain as “a planned invasion.”
Of Floyd, an African-American man who was killed by US police, she wrote that “very few people would care about a drug-addicted hustler.”
Regarding the controversy, Gascón has said that these were things of the past and that now they were coming to light to harm her and her family, which is why she closed her X account.
Gascón, who is the first transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for her role in 'Emilia Pérez', was scheduled to travel to the United States from Spain to appear at the Critics Choice Awards, Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America Awards, but, as reported by Variety, she will no longer attend.
According to several media outlets, Netflix, which owns the distribution rights to 'Emilia Pérez' in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom and has invested millions of dollars in the film’s awards campaign, will no longer cover Karla’s travel and makeup expenses for the awards.
The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Gascón has been removed from the film's awards season promotional campaigns and that some billboards, which include her image, will soon be changed to feature her co-stars, including Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Adriana Paz.
Another thing that Netflix did not like was that the Spanish actress gave an hour-long interview with CNN to talk about the controversial tweets she posted years ago, without notifying the platform.
In this regard, Gascón published a statement on his Instagram account on February 4: “For years, I gave body and soul to the Emilia Perez Family. As I always do with everything I love and believe in.…
“…In the last few days, I have been going through a roller coaster of emotions. I have been transparent because I have nothing to hide. During this time, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others. But today, I finally know who I am…
“…I only seek the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers, and to move forward with my new life. They want to apply the “cancel culture”...
The actress concluded her statement with the following reflection "I ask the Hollywood experts, the journalists who know me and have followed my career,
How do I move forward?"
'Emilia Pérez' has 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña).
Many believe that Gascón's controversy could affect her winning the Best Actress award and the film's receipt of some golden statuettes; however, some Oscar voters point out that this will not affect the results, because they will judge the film on its merits.
And although the actress has tried to clear her name, her image is increasingly damaged, and not participating in the promotion of the film will surely be a hard blow to her career, which began to take off thanks to her leading role in 'Emilia Pérez'.
