Oscar Nominees 2025

On January 23, the Oscar nominations for 2025 were announced. They had been delayed for a week due to the Los Angeles fires. Other than the timing, there weren't too many surprises in the list of nominees, although there are some oversights that fans and critics may lament.

Favorites

'Emilia Pérez' is the big favorite thanks to its 13 nominations, although 'Wicked' and 'The Brutalist' (each 10 nominations) have not been far behind. 'Anora' and 'Conclave', meanwhile, have 8 options for an Oscar, so the gala is going to be highly competitive.

Unfortunate snubs

Among those 'snubbed' by the nominations, we find 'Gladiator II' which barely managed to scrape together a minor nomination. Others who missed out were Pamela Anderson ('The Last Showgirl' - photo), Daniel Craig ('Queer'), Nicole Kidman ('Babygirl') and Angelina Jolie ('Maria').

A 'Succession' battle

As a supporting actor in 'A Real Pain,' Kieran Culkin already won a Golden Globe this year. He also 'took' one from Jeremy Strong in 2024, when both were nominated as leading actors for their roles in the TV series 'Succession.'

Kieran Culkin in 'A Real Pain'

A year later, Kieran and Jeremy are opponents again for the Best Supporting Actor award. Kieran plays an imbalanced young Jewish man who visits Jewish heritage sites in Poland with his cousin (played by Jesse Eisenberg, who is nominated for best screenplay).

Jeremy Strong in 'The Apprentice'

Jeremy Strong, on the other hand, plays the lawyer Roy Cohn who taught Donald Trump the (dirty) tricks of the trade in 70s and 80s New York. It's a fabulous performance that has gone mostly under the radar because the film didn't get much play in theaters due to legal threats by the Trump team. Now, both he and lead actor Sebastian Stan (Trump), have been nominated for Oscars.
