Joseph Gordon-Levitt, American actor, singer, director and producer, was born on 17 February 1981 in Los Angeles, California, into a non-Orthodox Jewish family. From an early age, he showed a talent for acting, which led him to appear on screen from the age of six in commercials.

He also had appearances in TV series such as ‘Family Ties’ and ‘Murder, She Wrote’  His first major role was in the film ‘A River Runs Through It’ in 1992, directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt, when Joseph was 11 years old.

At the age of 15, Joseph landed one of his most memorable roles as Tommy Solomon in the sitcom ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’ (1996-2001), where he played a teenage alien in a human body, a role that catapulted him to fame.

During that time he studied at Columbia University, where he focused on history, literature and French poetry.

At the age of 23, his return to acting was praised, especially for his roles in independent films such as ‘Mysterious Skin’ (2004) and ‘Brick’ (2005), which demonstrated his ability to play complex and dark characters, a departure from the lighter characters he was used to.

In 2009, Joseph starred in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy ‘500 Days of Summer’ opposite Zooey Deschanel. The film was a critical and commercial success, and became a modern classic of the genre.

In 2010, Gordon-Levitt was part of the cast of Christopher Nolan's ‘Inception’, where he played Arthur, the right-hand man of Leonardo DiCaprio's character. He worked again with Nolan in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012). These roles cemented his status as a top Hollywood star.

In 2013, Joseph made his directorial and screenwriting debut with a comedy-drama in which he starred alongside Scarlett Johansson. The film received positive reviews for its bold approach and narrative.

In 2016, Joseph played the controversial former NSA contractor Edward Snowden in the film ‘Snowden’, directed by Oliver Stone. His performance was noted for the authenticity and depth he brought to such a complex character.

Joseph, who founded ‘HitRecord’ at the age of 26, has been developing this online artistic collaboration platform for years. This innovative approach allows creators from all over the world to work together on audiovisual projects. Some of the projects sponsored by the initiative have won several Emmys.

At 33, Joseph married Tasha McCauley in 2014, an entrepreneur and robotics expert with whom he has been happily married for ten years. The couple have two children, but nothing more is known about them, as Gordon-Levitt is private about his personal life.

In addition to acting, Joseph is a musician and has showcased his singing talent in various projects, including on his ‘HitRecord’ platform. He has also performed covers and musical collaborations with other artists, while continuing to work in film, albeit in less starring roles.

But perhaps most recently (and most sweetly), we were able to enjoy his warm voice on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ in June, where he paid a sweet birthday tribute to his wife, Tasha McCauley, performing one of her favourite songs: ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift.
