The naysayers were right: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck didn't last

After several rumours suggesting that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were no longer together, it now looks like it's official: the Hollywood superstars are splitting up. JLo signed the divorce papers on Tuesday 20 August.

According to People, the singer filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The reported separation date was given as 26 April 2024.

Lopez filed for divorce herself without using a lawyer and is technically representing herself. The artist doesn't mention any prenuptial agreement in the document and, according to TMZ's sources, there really wasn't one. That would mean that everything they earned while they were married would be split between the two of them.

As People points out, the date she filed for divorce is very significant. 20 August 2024 would be the second anniversary of the couple's traditional wedding in Georgia in 2022.

Lopez and Affleck have a long history together, dating back to the early 2000s. As Page Six recalls, the two met in late 2001 during the filming of the movie ‘Gigli’.

At the time, J.Lo was still married to her second husband, Cris Judd. Judd and Lopez separated in June 2002 and the new Hollywood (and pop) star couple was christened 'Bennifer' (the union of the names Ben and Jennifer) and went public with their relationship shortly after.

However, Lopez and Affleck separated in 2004, a few months after postponing a wedding scheduled for September 2003. The now-ex-couple continued to have an amicable relationship in the years that followed.

Over the years, the two had various relationships, including long-term marriages. In April 2021, rumours began to swirl that the actors were back together. Finally, more than 17 years after their first ending, Bennifer was back together.

In April 2022 it was confirmed that the couple were engaged, and already in July they celebrated a surprise wedding in Las Vegas. Later, on 20 August, Bennifer had her big, classic wedding, held in Georgia.

As Page Six reports, rumours of their split began in May this year. After that, the couple's appearances began to dwindle, with Lopez celebrating her 55th birthday without Affleck. The two put their Los Angeles home up for sale and, while Affleck has a new house, JLo was spotted looking at mansions with her agent.
