Big, small, and best moments of the 2023 Golden Globes
If you're going to pose with a Golden Globe, do it extravagantly. Paul Walter Houser won the award as the Supporting Actor in the Limited Series 'Black Bird.' His photos in the Press Room are now part of Hollywood history. Glorious.
Tom Cruise, Cate Blanchett, Zendaya, Brendan Fraser, Kevin Costner, and Amanda Seyfried were some of the well-known faces that did not show up at the Golden Globes. The awards are still marked by recent controversies, such as the absence of black members in the voting body. Still, the gala featured many other stars.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael started his presentation with a phrase that could have been controversial. In a gala held by an organization that has historically ignored black decision-making, it was a bold statement.

Halfway through the gala, Jerrod Carmichael burst onto the stage with three Golden Globes, joking that they were the ones Tom Cruise had returned. The actor had given back his Golden Globes when the organization's controversies came to light.
Jerrod Charmichael hosted the evening, and as all hosts do, he was supposed to let the TV audience know where the ceremony was held. "So," he said, "we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston." The audience was in shock. The gala was, indeed, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel, where the singer was found dead in February 2012.
He's a genius of humor and demonstrated it as he collected his Cecil B. DeMille Honorary Award. Upon taking the stage, Eddie Murphy recreated the phrase that Will Smith yelled at Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars gala: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."
Ke Huy Quan won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once.' He took the opportunity to thank Steven Spielberg for giving him his first big breaks in film.
You may not recognize him right away, but he was Data in 'The Goonies' and Short Round in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.'
Angela Bassett becomes the first member of a Marvel film (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) to win a prestigious individual award. Aware of this, she acknowledged that "we have made history with this nomination and this award." So, next comes... the Oscar?
It is the second time Angela Bassett wins a Golden Globe. The first was in 1994, for her leading role as Tina Turner in 'What's Love Got To Do With It.'
Michelle Yeoh's speech was one of the best of the night, and yet, the director wanted to cut it for going on too long. Her answer was clear and direct. "Shut up, please! I can beat you up, okay? And that's serious." Whoever has seen 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' knows that she's not exaggerating.
Tyler James Williams won his first Golden Globe, in the category Best Supporting Actor(Musical, Comedy or Drama). He got the award for his role in 'Abbot Elementary,' proving that everyone hates him. If you don't get the reference, Williams was the lead in the sitcom 'Everybody Hates Chris' from 2005 to 2009.
Colin Farrell won his first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for 'In Bruges' in 2009. That film was directed by Martin McDonagh and also starred Brendan Gleeson. In 2023, he wins the Golden Globe again. This time it's for ' The Banshees of Inisherin', directed by... yes, Martin McDonagh and co-starring Brendan Gleeson.
As Colin Farrell picked up his Golden Globe for Best Actor, he directly addressed Ana de Armas, who had presented him with the award. Farrell praised the actress' performance as Marilyn Monroe in 'Blonde' and confessed that the film had brought him to tears.
Santiago Mitre, director of 'Argentina, 1985', received the award for Best Non-English Language Film together with lead actor Ricardo Darín. At the end of their speech, the actor talked to his fellow countrymen watching TV at home. He said in Spanish: "For all the people of Argentina, after the World Cup, this is a great joy." It's indeed an unforgettable month for the south American country.
Hilary Swank, Kaley Cuoco, and Abby Elliot, among others, showed up to the gala pregnant and very happy.
Jennifer Coolidge won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 'The White Lotus.' Her speech was one of the best of the night. Coolidge was likable, funny, and relaxed. She confessed that she'd had a bad period in her life but that she was now living a wonderful personal and professional moment. "Even the neighbors talk to me," she said jokingly.
He did not get a prize but was honored by several winning colleagues anyway. First, it was Austin Butler who sent Brad Pitt a sincere "I love you." Then, it was Quinta Brunson (Best Actress in 'Abbott Elementary') who confessed she was nervous to have him in front of her during her thank-you speech. It's understandable, as he is a legend in Hollywood.
