A touch of nostalgia

Friday and Saturday nights were golden in the late 90s/early 2000s. British families got together (after consulting the TV guide of course) to watch the evening shows - generally with a takeaway perched atop a tray. What are the presenters of these shows doing now and would you even recognise them if you saw them today?

Would you recognise them now?

Let us wonder what happened to those brilliant game shows that we settled down on the sofa to watch together. Looking now at a photo of this man - could you recognise him and remember the show he used to present?

Craig Charles

Of course, it's Craig Charles, the longest presenter of the addictive TV show, 'Robot Wars.' People at home had the chance to make their own robot which would get a chance to battle the hosts' innovations: Matilda, Shunt, and, of course, Sir Killalot were just a few of the mini, mighty machines. Craig Charles now works on the radio, whilst DJing and picking up the occasional acting job.

Angellica Bell

Since Angellica’s TV show days, she has had a number of different presenting jobs, including presenting at the BAFTA Children & Young People Awards in November 2022. She also won Celebrity MasterChef in 2017. Good looking and great at cooking, what more could you ask for? But can you remember her from the '90s?

The Saturday Show

She was a regular on CBBC shows including Xchange, 50/50, Short Change, and The Saturday Show in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In 2010 she married former kid’s TV presenter Michael Underwood, The couple met while working together on CBBC in 2000.

Michael Underwood

This previous kids' TV presenter has gone on to present 'Good Morning Britain', 'Surprise Surprise' and 'GMTV'. As mentioned previously he is married to Angellica Bell, and the couple have two children together. But what was the show he was most known for?

Jungle Run

He is perhaps best known as the presenter of the fantastic 'Jungle Run'. Michael Underwood has presented several shows across CBBC and CITV including ‘Starfinder’, ‘Ministry of Mayhem’ and ‘The Make Shift’.

D. and Dom

This comedy pair have made a living goofing around for the public’s amusement. They have appeared in tours and cruises up till 2019 and have launched their own festival show. But what was the name of the show that made them so famous in the early 00s and was so popular that the duo performs an adapted stage version around the UK’s Butlins venues?

D. And Dom In Da Bungalow

'D. And Dom In Da Bungalow' live kids' TV show was enormous back in the day – with their jokes and pranks becoming so famous that some people still repeat them today. The most popular was their Bogies prank, where they would go to a quiet place such as a library and say the word ‘bogies’ at an increasing volume until people complained or kicked them out. Never gets old.

Neil Buchanan

Before he landed his job as the presenter on one of the best-loved kids' shows of all time, he was the lead guitarist in a relatively successful heavy metal band called Marseille. He is now an ambassador for the Prince’s Foundation For Children And The Arts he spends the majority of his time painting and exhibiting his work. The photo gives it away?

Art Attack

But he will always be remembered as the face of Art Attack which ran for an incredible 20 seasons, he also appeared in and produced ZZZap!.

Cat Deeley

When Deeley’s original show finished in 2003, she went on to appear in a number of shows, including 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire', 'Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway' as well as appearing in adverts and the revamp of 'Stars In Their Eyes'. She also spends time doing charity work as a patron of Great Ormond Street Hospital and is also an active member of UNICEF. But what was the show that launched Deeley’s career?

SM:TV

Cat Deeley co-presented 'SM:TV' with one of the most famous television duos in UK television history, Ant and Dec. She also presented the music shows 'CD:UK' and 'CD:UK Hotshots'.

Jamie Theakston

Still presenting today, despite revealing his recent cancer diagnosis, preferring radio to television, hosting the breakfast show on London’s Heart. This presenter was barely off our screens in the ‘90s and hosted a number of shows, but which shot him to fame?

Live and Kicking

Do you remember 'Live & Kicking' and 'Top of the Pops'? Those great shows were hosted by Jamie Theakston. He also narrated the BBC documentary series 'Traffic Cops' from 2003 and 2015, and again on Channel 5 from 2016 onwards.

Dave Benson Phillips

He does voice-over work and occasionally appears on TV as well as being a successful DJ, and has also appeared on 'Celebrity Juice'. In 2009, he was the victim of a death hoax perpetrated across the internet which reported that he had died in a car crash. But he was previously known for his presenting talent in which show?

Get Your Own Back

He was the bundle of energy on ‘Get Your Own Back’, the kids' show that gunged your annoying parents. And he's still touring with his gunge machine across the UK taking his gunge tank to Camp Bestival and The Edinburgh Festival.

Ant and Dec

Of course, these two are a national treasure and belong in the hall of fame greats. They’ve won the National Television Award for most popular entertainment/TV presenter every year since 2001, but where did they start?

Photo: ITV

Byker Grove then SM:TV

They started their careers on 'Byker Grove' which lead to a short-lived pop career as PJ and Duncan. They then went on to present on 'SMTV Live', 'CD:UK', 'Gimme 5', as well as having their own show, 'The Ant & Dec Show' from 1995 to 1997.

Holly Willoughby

She entertained the nation by presenting 'This Morning' alongside Phillip Schofield. Holly may have been fifty percent of Britain's favourite presenting duo but like many popular presenters, Holly’s career started through children’s television.

S Club 7: the show

Before becoming a tv presenter, she played a character called Zoe on an episode of S Club 7’s show, creatively named 'S Club 7'. She then presented shows such as 'Xchange', 'X-perimental', and 'CBBC at the Fame Academy'.

Fearne Cotton

She presented shows such as The Saturday Show, Diggit, Draw Your Own Toons, Eureka TV, Finger Tips, and Smile. In 2007, she became the first regular female presenter of the Radio 1 chart show which she co-hosted with Reggie Yates for two years. She went on to present her own radio show, airing every weekday morning from 2009 to 2016 She worked a long stint on Celebrity Juice and has her own fashion and homeware range with very.co.uk. But she had a young start which shot her to fame…

The Disney Club

Fearne began her career at just 15 years old, with The Disney Club on GMTV. She has presented television programmes such as 'Top of the Pops' and 'Red Nose day' telethons. She is a British household name.

Ulrika Jonsson

She won Celebrity Big Brother and come a long way since she began her career began as a weather lady, but that's not what the public best knows her for.

Gladiators

That's right, she was the presenter of 'Gladiators' - that Saturday night show the British public would sit down to watch, take sharp intakes of breath and sing along to 'Another one bites the dust'. She has always been on our screens and boasts an illustrious career, keeping her in the spotlight.

Ainsley Harriott

This man continues to cook to this day and has had many a TV show named after him. But the one which really captured the British public's hearts didn't have his name in the title. Can you remember what the show was?

Ready Steady Cook

The 1994 Daytime tv show saw two members of the public providing two celebrity chefs with a bag of ingredients they had bought, usually to a set budget of £5. Tomato vs pepper. We all remember arguing with our family members at home about what we would do with that box of ingredients. TV gold.

Denise Van Outen

Now best known for her appearances on 'The Masked Singer'. But even before her 'Celebrity Juice' days and musical theatre stardom, she appeared in a show that would change her life (and that of the British public) forever...

The Big Breakfast

The 90's version of 'This Morning' which ran for nearly a decade on Channel 4 threw Denise Van Outen into the spotlight. Amazingly, the show produced a total of 2,482 shows and launched some incredible careers.
