Celebrities' first tattoos and their meanings
Celebrities love tattoos and many have more than one. However, the first one is always very special to them. Vanessa Hudgens got her first tattoo when she was 22 years old. It's a butterfly that was drawn on the back of her neck.
"It was very spontaneous, though I had actually wanted it for years," she explained on the David Letterman show. "A butterfly landed on my mom's stomach a week before I was born, and that's why they called me Vanessa. It means butterfly in a type of Latin."
Johnny Depp's first tattoo is on the top of his right arm. It's the image of a Cherokee chief. He got the tattoo at age 17. It's a symbol in honour of his Cherokee ancestry.
Did you know Katy Perry tattooed the name 'Jesus' on her left wrist?
"I got this tattoo when I was 18," she says, "because I know it will always be a part of me. When I'm playing guitar, (the tattoo) is looking at me and saying 'remember where you came from." Katy was raised in a very religious family.
The model Cara Delevingne got her first tattoo in 2013: a lion on the index finger of her right hand, made by the artist Bang Bang in New York.
"I'm a leo," she says. "It's my first tattoo. I grew up thinking I shouldn't be afraid of anything. (Then) I lost that inner fire. So I decided to draw myself a lion so that this would remain in my mind."
Actress Kristen Stewart marked her skin for the first time in 2013, in the area of her left wrist.
She's got four little stripes there. So far, she has not revealed what they mean, but some believe it may be the symbol of a punk band called Black Flag or the number of years she dated Robert Pattinson, her co-star in the saga 'Twilight'.
If there is one famous lover of tattoos, it's Justin Bieber. He has drawn on many parts of his body, but his first tattoo was on his left hip. Bieber began tattooing himself at the age of 17.
"The first tattoo I got is based on a book my whole family has read," he explained to GQ. "Everyone got it on their wrist, but I wasn't sure if I wanted a lot of tattoos, so I made sure it would not be too visible. Basically it represents a seagull who has always wanted to be more than just a seagull."
Miley Cyrus loves tattoos very much and has about 40 of them on her whole body. Her first tattoo was made at the age of 17 in the rib area. She had the phrase 'Just breathe' tattooed there, in honour of her friend Vanessa who had died of lung disease and her two grandparents who died of lung cancer.
Khloe Kardashian does not have an excessive love for tattoos, but the first one was very special for her.
In 2008, the socialite got a tattoo on her left wrist with the phrase 'I love you' in the handwriting of her late father, Robert Kardashian. The sentence was copied from a letter he had written to her.
The ex-footballer David Beckham is also a lover of tattoos, and we can see many of them, especially on his arms.
One of his first tattoos was drawn on his lower back, in 1999, when his first son was born. It reads 'Brooklyn,' in honor of his son with Victoria Beckham.
Demi Lovato has more than 10 tattoos all over her body. The first one she got at age 16. It's the phrase 'You make me beautiful' on her right rib.
The line is part of Bethany Dillon's song 'Beautiful', which Demi likes very much. "Those words were very encouraging for me and raised me up in a very dark moment of my life," the singer once said.
Adam Levine's body is covered in tattoos, and his first one was a dove on his left arm. He got it when he was 21, as a tribute to 9/11. What's more, he had it made only five days after the attack on the Twin Towers in New York.
"I felt I needed to say something with this peaceful drawing on my body," he told People in 2013.
Not everyone is happy with their first tattoo. Jennifer Lawrence regrets hers, because she says she was fooled into getting it. JLaw was not tattooed because she really wanted it, but because she had made a pact with her companions in 'Hunger Games,' Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. While she got the tattoo they all pledged to get, Liam and Josh did not keep her word.
JLaw got the symbol H2O tattooed on her hand, but it was done wrong. The number 2 is not a subscript, like it's supposed to be in chemistry, but a superscript. In an attempt to explain the tattoo, Jennifer told News.com.au: "I did it just to remind me that I should drink more water."
Singer Ariana Grande has several tattoos. The first one she got in 2012 when she was 18 years old.
The tattoo is the shape of a heart on Grande's right index toe. The performer explained that she got this tattoo while working on her debut album, 'Yours Truly,' and that it is inspired by the song 'Tattooed Heart'. She shared a photo of the special moment on social media.
Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin got his first tattoo in 1992. It's a rose entangled in a sword, but only the lucky few can verify this, because it was placed in the groin area.
