Celebrities who've come out as transgender or non-binary
More and more celebrities are making statements about their gender identity. An example is the international artist you see in the photo, Demi Lovato. They declared in Kotb: "I came out as nonbinary in May, and since then it’s just felt like my truth has been living my life as loudly as possible without a care in the world."
The British singer-songwriter told Jameela Jamil during the podcast 'I Weigh' in 2019: "I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between — somewhat on the spectrum."
Elliot Page, star of 'Juno' and 'The Umbrella Academy,' came out as transgender in 2020. Subsequently, through a post on Instagram he said: "I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this."
Actress and musician Janelle Monáe said on 'Red Table Talk', the online talk show hosted by Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris, that they are non-binary. "I just don't see myself as a woman, solely... I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the 'he' or the 'she'."
In an interview with Elle in 2015, Ruby Rose spoke about her gender identity: "Gender fluidity is not really feeling like you're at one end of the spectrum or the other. For the most part, I definitely don't identify as any gender. I'm not a guy; I don't really feel like a woman, but obviously, I was born one. So, I'm somewhere in the middle, which -- in my perfect imagination -- is like having the best of both sexes."
Sara Ramirez, known for having played Dr. Callie Torres in 'Grey's Anatomy,' released statements in this regard through a post on Instagram: "In me is the capacity to be Girlish boy, Boyish girl," ending with the hashtag #nonbinary.
Gigi Goode is a famous American drag queen who, as reported on 'Out', has stated on Instagram that they are a transgender and non-binary person.
One of the 'Queer Eye' Fab Five, Jonathan Van Ness, gave a statement to 'Out' in 2019 about their gender identity: "The older I get, the more I think that I’m non-binary — I’m gender nonconforming. Like, some days I feel like a man, but then other days I feel like a woman."
Australian actor Hugh Sheridan came out in a post on his Instagram profile: "I am still a human (non-binary/bi/me/Hughman) but I’m in a monogamous relationship with another man, who I love... I don’t accept a label cause it limits me..."
Amandla Stenberg has represented non-binary people on the big screen. Her words on Tumblr in 2016, in response to a question about pronouns, were: "I honestly don’t know… I mean they/them makes me feel comfortable but I know that the media and the general populace that follows me will critique it / not understand, which makes me feel sad and almost more uncomfortable. So I guess [I am] she/her for now."
Drag queen Laganja Estranja came out as a trans woman on the sixth season of 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' the famous competition between drag queens.
Alok Vaid-Menon is a poet, influencer, and a great LGBTQIA+ rights activist. They said in an interview on ABC: "I see a world without the gender binary... There's as many genders as there are people." They added: "A lot of people mistake what I'm trying to do as erasing their right to be a man or a woman, when in fact I'm championing for it."
Lachlan Watson, known for 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' said in a 2019 interview with Elite Daily that they are a non-binary person.
Actress and model Indya Moore gave a statement to L'Officiel Singapore magazine: "I'm non-binary but I don't really talk about it that much. Don't feel like people really are there yet for understanding it, which I don't mind, but I also acknowledge the way people see me as a woman."
The 'Thirteen' star came out in 2021 in an interview with Time Magazine. "For a year now, I have been privately identifying and living as a woman— a trans woman."
Known for her role as Brandy Epps in 'Orange Is The New Black,' Asia Kate Dillon played one of the first non-binary characters in North American televisionin 'Billions.' They said that playing the role of Taylor for the first time really helped them realize that they didn't need to change their body to be valid as a non-binary person. Dillon also realized that the pronouns 'his/they' are the right ones for them.
Quintessa Swindell is one of Hollywood's rising stars. In an interview with GLAAD, they said: "I identify as non-binary and gender non-conforming." They added: "To be non-binary is to explore one's self outside of the bounds of heteronormative society. Fighting for the underrepresented is both a duty and privilege at the same time."
Liv Hewson first came out when they were 16. They told 'Gay Star News' in 2019 that "people have a sort of preconception as to what being androgynous means and what non-binary people have to look like" They added: "There just isn’t one way to be non-binary. There isn’t one way to play around with gender and there’s no wrong way to look and be non-binary."
