David Bowie and Iman: the model's tender revelations about their love
We know them as one of showbiz' most famous and striking couples, especially in the 1980s and 1990s. But what happened between Iman and David Bowie? The widow of the great British artist has said a few things about that.
On January 10, 2016, David Bowie (David Robert Jones) passed away. He was surrounded by his family.
The sad news came unexpectedly, just two days after his 69th birthday, the same day his last (and 25th) studio album 'Black Star' was released. It seemed to herald his imminent death.
'Black Star' was made while the famous rock star fought a long battle with liver cancer, which, sadly, he didn't win.
At his side, for the last 26 years of his life, there was always his wife, Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, a Somali supermodel.
In the 90s, she was one of the first activists to claim the same pay between light-skinned and colored models.
After the death of her husband, Iman witdrew with her grief for a few years, aware of having to take care of their daughter Lexi (2000) in that difficult time.
In 2021, five years after her husband's death, the beautiful Iman decided to open up and reveal some untold anecdotes about her incredible love story with Bowie. In addition, she launched a line of perfumes named 'Love Memoir', totally inspired by, and dedicated to, her husband.
In a video interview with People, Iman recounts the first time they met in 1990, just before the singer took to the stage before a concert in Los Angeles. Apparently, for Bowie, it was love at first sight. Iman's words on that day: "We crossed each other, and he stopped and shook my hand and said, 'I hope you enjoy the show.' And that was that— that was my meeting with David."
Iman also reveals that she was a huge fan of the artist, so much so that she often went to his concerts. Being already an established supermodel, she was frequently invited backstage, an invitation she always turned down because she didn't feel comfortable in such situations.
Their first official meeting took place at dinner with a mutual friend, photographer Greg Gorman, who apparently invited both of them for his birthday. Iman only later found out that it was a dinner for four - a kind of blind date.
Although Iman had many doubts about dating a rock star of that level, after a few months she changed her mind because she got to know the real David Robert Jones, the man and not the singer. "He’s such a gentleman," her words to People.
Among the most romantic anecdotes, Iman recalls when on a date, a few weeks after the first meeting, David Bowie knelt to tie her shoelaces that had untied. At that moment Iman thought: he's the one.
Iman and Bowie got married a year later, in Florence on April 24, 1992, and they never left each other since. Iman was by his side until the artist's death in 2016.
According to Forbes, David Robert Jones, born in Brixton (London) on January 8, 1947, left a fortune of about 100 million dollars.
He left it almost entirely to his family: his wife Iman, his daughter Lexi and his son Duncan Jones, the son he had in 1971 with his first wife Angie. To his lifelong assistant, Corinne Schwab, known to all as Coco, he left $ 2 million.
