Don't dress up as the Covid-virus or vaccine. The pandemic may be less present in our daily lives, but it is still ongoing and millions of people have died. The pandemic has been a scary episode in our recent history, for sure, but it's not the kind of scariness that is suitable for Halloween.

It may be tempting to put on a monkey suit and joke about the monkeypox virus, but just like Covid - or, for that matter, polio, HIV, or bird flu - it's actually hurtful and not funny.

That's obvious, isn't it? Also, avoid other warmongers like Hamas, or controversial political leaders like Kim Jong Un, Bashar al-Assad, Lukashenko, or Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman. Not to mention the Hitlers and Mussolinis of the past.

If a costume is emblematic of an ethnic or cultural group that you don't belong to, reconsider your decision to put it on for Halloween. Other cultures' traditions or garments are not a prop for you to have fun with; they are people's lived experiences and identities.

Also, avoid blackface or brownface, no matter how much you respect the person of color you are imitating. Your look could offend others and spoil the party, as blackface is a practice historically rooted in racism.

While a Michael Jackson costume may be considered bad taste these days, it's totally fine to be a zombie resembling those of the 'Thriller' video. Or, really, any zombie scene.

Raid your first aid kit and wrap yourself in all the bandage swaths you can find. If you need more, go to the pharmacy, it's always open. The important thing is that you cover your private areas as well as parts of your face. And then you're a mummy.
