For a variety of causes, buildings, towns, and cities get abandoned. Natural disasters, political unrest, war, and economic downturns have resulted in some of the most intriguing places on earth.

Ghost towns and deserted buildings have a unique history and provide the perfect setting for a mystery or horror film.

Bodie is located east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California. In 1876, Bodie became a boom town when gold was discovered.

The abandoned town is now considered a National Historic Landmark. Only 110 of the original buildings remain, including a gold mill. Interested visitors can travel rough terrain to tour the remains of the gold rush town.

Not far from Dubai is the abandoned village of Al Madam. Rows of homes and a mosque, originally built in the 1970s, have been slowly disappearing into the desert sands.

Nobody knows why the residents left their homes but it appears that they left quickly, leaving their doors open and many possessions behind. Some say that there were evil forces that led residents to flee. Others believe that the frequent sandstorms made the area uninhabitable.

Pripyat is located near Chernobyl, the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. The town had to be evacuated due to high radiation levels.

While there are now visitors to the area, this ghost town will remain uninhabitable for thousands of years due to high levels of radiation absorption into the ground.

Above the Arctic circle, exists this remote abandoned Soviet Union coal mining town accessible by boat or snowmobile.

The Pyramiden mining settlement closed after the mine was closed in 1998. A tour of Pyramiden today offers visitors a look back into the Soviet Era.

The Island of the Dolls is located in the canals of Xochimilco which is south of Mexico City. In the 1950s, previous owner Don Julian Santana began hanging dolls from trees and buildings all over the island.

As the story goes, a young girl drowned nearby and Santana started experiencing strange occurrences which terrified him. In an effort to scare away evil spirits, he collected old discarded dolls and hung them to keep ward off evil. There is now a small shop and a museum on the island.

In rural northwest Alaska, the town of Solomon was settled by members of the Fish River Tribe. Then what began as a gold mining camp, developed into a town in the 1900s.

In 1913, the railroad and much of the town was destroyed by a terrible storm and residents were forced to relocate to the town of Dickson. As the mining boom was ending, the town was largely inhabited by indigenous peoples. In 1918, the influenza pandemic had a devastating impact on the population.

In the city of Modernu, 732 castles stand empty and unfinished due to a housing developer filing for bankruptcy due to the economic downturn.

The construction of this community began in 2014. Once intended for foreign buyers seeking an investment opportunity, the fate of the empty village remains unknown.
