One More Chance: An Evening with Jamie Foxx.

Jamie Foxx took to the stage the stage to share his 'journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration,' as he had previously written on Instagram.

Jamie Foxx's honest truth

The show will took place in Atlanta on three nights, from Oct. 3 to 5 and the result was an emotional, heart string pulling, one man's honest truth. So what did the show focus on?

An emotional recounting

Jamie Foxx opened up about his health scare in April 2023 and the show was filled with music, emotional moments and even times where he ended up hugging members of the audience. The actor posted photos of key moments in the show on his Instagram and also said, “When people ask me is this a stand up comedy show I say 'No it’s an artistic explanation.' "

'Pure joy' after telling his side of the story

“God is good…. As I post these pictures, my heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy…on October 3 fourth and fifth I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story and there was no better place than Atlanta Georgia,” the star wrote on his social media.

Medical Complication

The health issue he refers to started with a 'bad headache' which turned out as a 20 day coma. It was put down to a 'medical complication' and he remembers very little. Jamie Foxx took his time coming back into the public eye, saying to his fans on on social media, "I went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through... I just didn't want you to see me like that."

Jamie Foxx was 'not 100%'

Jamie Foxx's physical health, mental health, as well as serious accusations made against him, had been making media headlines before he came back to tell his story. OK Magazine's insider reported that “he may not be at 100 percent, but the last thing he wants is to mess with the progress he has made.” It seems revelations which arose last year about alleged assault may have put a spanner in those works.

Alleged assault

The lawsuit, obtained by TMZ in late 2023, revealed that Foxx was at 'Catch NYC & Roof in August 2015 at around 11 PM'. This day, over 8 years ago, he allegedly made very inappropriate statements and physically assaulted her, according to the aforementioned media. But this is not the first time we have seen the darker side of Jamie Foxx behind his professional success.

Not everything is as it seems

The lives of all these Hollywood stars seem glamorous and far removed from those of us mortals. But in most cases, they have problems that are often just as bad (or even worse) than the public who go to see their films. This has been the case for Jamie Foxx (real name Eric Marlon Bishop), born on 13 December 1967, in Terrell, Texas (USA).

A successful career

Anyone would think that the actor would consider himself a lucky man to have been part of some of the highest grossing productions in the film industry. He is a man who obviously possesses an incredible talent.

'Django' and other masterpieces

You just have to look back at his performances in hits such as 'Collateral' (2004), 'Dreamgirls' (2006), 'Django' (2012), 'Annie' (2014) and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (2021) to realise this actor has had one of the most successful careers in Hollywood.

Multi-award winner

He got some serious recognition for his performance of Ray Charles in the 2004 biographical film 'Ray', which earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor. Not bad.

Also a talented man in music

Jamie Foxx is undeniably talented in the movie industry, but what many may not know is that he also shines within the music industry, too. In fact, he can proudly say he has won a Grammy as a musician.

An author

And if that all wasn't enough to convince us of his success, he is also a television presenter and entrepreneur - then, in October 2021, he published the book 'Act Like You Got Some Sense' to great critical acclaim.

A revelation from the past

In the book, Jamie Foxx writes down his memories and recounts the story of one of the most difficult times he has faced in his life.

A family with a shocking secret

At the age of 5, the actor found out that the person who he believed to be his sister was actually his biological mother. And who he thought was his mother was actually his grandmother.

Tough beginnings

His parents, Louise Annette Talley Dixon and Darrell Bishop, split up when Jamie Foxx was just a newborn baby.

Adopted

Following his parent's split, he was adopted by his grandparents Mark and Estelle Marie Talley - as he himself revealed in 2005 in an interview with 'The Oprah Magazine'.

His grandmother had also adopted his mother

But the story goes even deeper: Estelle Marie Talley was not actually his biological grandmother. She had, a long time ago, adopted the actor's biological mother, Louise Annette.

Missing his biological mother

His grandmother gave him all the love a child could ever need. But, perhaps it wasn't enough. The actor revealed years later to Oprah Winfrey that he sometimes missed his biological mother (pictured), whom he considered very beautiful and captivating.

Artistic beginnings

“My grandmother was 60 years old when she adopted me. She ran a nursery school and had a library in the house. She saw me reading early, saw I was smart and believed I was born to achieve truly special things.” said the actor in an interview with Time magazine. Grandmother Estelle realised that Jamie was an exceptionally intelligent child and it was her who pushed his creative side.

Pianist

And so Jamie Foxx learned to play the piano at a very young age and then joined the band of the Baptist Church he attended. Later, all his dedication to the instrument served him very well in his professional career.

A father's absence

As for his biological father, he was quite simply never present in his life. Robert Daniels, one of the artist's coaches in high school, revealed to GQ magazine in 2004 that Jamie had always hoped his father would turn up to see him play. The actor played basketball and American football.

Distance from his biological father

Although they lived geographically close to each other, the relationship between father and son was non-existent. Jamie Foxx has previously said that perhaps the issue was religion - that his father is Muslim and he is not - could be a reason for this estrangement.

An attempt at reconciliation

Although there had been several attempts at reconciliation, the relationship between father (now called Shahid Abdula) and son has not been strengthened.

Another heartbreaking loss

To make matters worse, his grandfather and adopted father, Mark Talley, died when Jamie Foxx was 17, leaving him absolutely devastated.

His stepfather imprisoned

Another difficult moment was when his stepfather, George Dixon, was arrested and sentenced for 7 years in jail for carrying $25 worth of illegal substances. “I couldn’t visit him in jail because I saw him as a king, but I wrote him, ‘Things have gotten good for me, and when you get out I will save your life” - the actor acknowledged in 2020 on 'The Graham Norton Show'.

Living with George Dixon...

George Dixon taught Jamie a lot, and his prison sentence made a huge mark on the actor. So much so that after serving 7 years of his sentence, he was taken by Foxx to live in his house, despite being already divorced from his mother.

... and also with his mother

In 2005, Foxx had almost no relationship with his biological mother, despite the efforts he made in trying to have a connection with his birth mother (he always invited her to his house at Christmas and she didn't come). Until, in 2008, Louise Annette changed her mind, went to spend the Christmas holidays with him and never left.

Fear of Covid

Jamie Foxx produced his biographical book in the midst of the pandemic, a period that marked him greatly. "In the beginning, I was obsessed with the plan 'Get away from the windows—Covid is right outside," he acknowledged to Men's Health.

The loss of his sister

But it wasn't just hard because of the fear of contracting the virus. His half-sister, DeOndra Dixon (who was born with Down's Syndrome) died, aged 36, in October 2020. They were both very close and the actor suffered greatly from her loss. “I still can hear my sister’s voice, laugh, and stuff like that.”

The end of his relationship with Katie Holmes

And just before Pandemic started, his relationship with Katie Holmes, which had begun in 2013, came to an end. Foxx and the actress had lived out their years of dating almost completely secretively.

An oppressive divorce clause

In fact, this secrecy was forced. This is because the divorce between Holmes and Tom Cruise included a clause that required the actress not to make any of her romantic relationships public until at least five years had passed.

A life of hidden pain

Despite all the turbulence that has happened throughout Jamie Foxx's life behind the cameras, he has progressed into one of the world's most loveable and respected actors. Too add to that, after baring all to a select audience in Atlanta, it seems the actor is improving mentally and physically, too. Perhaps the mantra 'a problem shared is a problem halved' may have some truth...
