A hero without a cape

A month has passed since Jeremy Renner's serious snowcat accident in Nevada. Here's what happened on that fateful day. As it turns out, Renner got hurt while committing a truly heroic act.

Details of the event

A report from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, accessed by CNN, details how Jeremy Renner got into an accident while trying to save his nephew from being run over by his snowcat.

14,000LB vehicle

The report states that the actor hit the brake on his Pistenbully snowplow after noticing that it "began sliding" This caused Renner "to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake."

Trying to avert a fatal accident

When he got out of the truck, he saw that the vehicle was heading straight for his nephew. "He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully," the report said.

He could not climb the truck

To change the course of the heavy machine, Jeremy Renner tried to climb back into the truck. However, he was "immediately pulled under the left side track."

The Pistonbully rolled over his chest

"The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road. Jeremy was, "completely crushed under a large snowcat (vehicle)" and had "extreme (difficulty) breathing," a 911 call log obtained by CNN said. "The right side of his chest [had] collapsed" and his "upper torso [was] crushed." The actor arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

Why did this happen?

The police report notes that, while "mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident, the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward." In other words, it was the restraint from hitting the emergency brake, caused by the shock of the machine slipping away, that caused the accident to happen.

A superhero's recovery

Jeremy Renner continues his slow but steady recovery and, from time to time, he shares his day-to-day life with the millions of fans who follow him on social media.

A year of rehabilitation

In his latest post, the actor appears in full rehabilitation, lying in bed and training his legs, one of the areas most damaged in the accident he suffered on 1 January 2023.

32 broken bones

In the same post, Jeremy Renner reveals the number of bones he fractured in the accident: "30 plus broken bones". To be exact, it's 32, as confirmed by 'Deadline'. Taking into account that an adult has 206 bones, we can establish that the actor broke a stunning 15.5% of the bones in his body.

Love, family and friends

"I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I," he wrote. "Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens."

And speaking of friends...

And he is right about his friends. One of them, actor Chris Evans, wanted to cheer him up with a joke that caused a frenzy on social media.

The Cap's joke

Captain America's Marvel alter ego asked if anyone had "checked on the snowcat???" He referred to the 6.5 tonnes-weighing machine that crashed Jeremy Renner.

...and there's more surgery to come

The actor suffered serious injuries to his legs for which he is likely to have to undergo surgery again.

Time between surgeries for the body to heal

"He will likely require more in the weeks ahead on his leg. Doctors tend to space out operations to allow time for the body’s natural healing process to kick in, and that’s the case here," says 'Radar Online'.

He's posting on social media

Jeremy Renner's fans have been reassured to see the actor upbeat and smiling in the posts he shared on social media.
