Who is Park Sung-hoon?

Park Sung-hoon is a South Korean actor whose recent claim to fame is playing the villain role in TvN’s hit drama series, ‘Queen of Tears’. He is also appearing in the long-awaited 'Squid Game 2' series, released on Netflix on December 26.

Born on February 18, 1985, Park Sung-hoon is a native of Gwacheon, Gyeongi Province, South Korea.

Grew up in tough financial situations

According to NBN TV, Park Sung-hoon grew up in a difficult financial situation after his father lost his job as a banker due to the Asian Financial Bank Crisis in 1997.

Acting beginnings

Segye Ilbo reports that Park Sung-hoon only became an actor after seriously considering what he wanted to do with his life. After deciding to take his hobby of watching movies to the next level, he decided to pursue acting and study it at university.

First roles

After graduating from university, Naver reports that Park Sung-hoon only managed to get roles after leaving his first theater company in 2008, acting in ‘A Frozen Flower’ and ‘Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard’.

Career slump

According to Naver, Park Sung-hoon faced a career slump for three and a half years after. He only managed to get an acting role later in 2011, which led to him acting in minor roles for ‘Moon Embracing the Sun’, and ‘Big’.

Breakthrough role

Park Sung-hoon eventually landed a breakthrough role in 2018, reports The Economic Times, when he played the role of Sung-hoon in ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’ and Jang Go-rae in ‘My Only One’ in 2019.

Earning awards

His performances in ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’ and ‘My Only One’ earned Park Sung-hoon multiple award nominations! According to Starfocus and Naver, he not only won the KBS Best New Actor award in 2018, but was also nominated for the Best New Actor category in the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Fast forward to now, and Park Sung-hoon has truly become a household name, landing roles in several hit dramas. Prior to ‘Queen of Tears’, he was cast in the Netflix hit series ‘The Glory’, where Naver reports his villain role was a very well-received one and earned him more award nominations.
