Father and 17-year-old son charged with murder of rapper PnB Rock
On September 12, rapper PnB Rock was shot several times and killed in a Los Angeles restaurant. It happened in broad daylight while he was eating lunch with his girlfriend. Less than three weeks later, police already have three people implicated in the crime.
A man named Freddie Lee Trone, his 17-year-old son, and the child's stepmother, Shauntel Trone, were allegedly the perpetrators of the crime, TMZ reports.
What was initially taken as a planned robbery, after the rapper had shown off his jewelry on social media hours before, now appears to have been something more spontaneous. TMZ heard from police sources found that Freddie Lee Trone and his son were in the parking lot of the restaurant when PnB Rock arrived to eat with his girlfriend. They had not expected to see him there.
It was the teenage son who allegedly shot the rapper, while the father waited for him in the car to flee the scene together. Afterward, TMZ reports, they burned the car in which they had fled.
The LA County District Attorney has charged the father and son with murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, and two counts of second-degree burglary, according to TMZ.
For her part, Shauntel Trone has reportedly been charged as an accessory to murder after the fact. Freddie Lee Trone, who was on the run for the past weeks, has been arrested in Las Vegas and will be extradited to Los Angeles to stand trial.
It's almost unbelievable that the young son of Freddie Lee Trone had the nerve to rob and shoot PnB Rock in a full restaurant in broad daylight. According to TMZ, the robbery took place in a Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles restaurant in Los Angeles.
According to TMZ, he entered the premises and repeatedly shot the rapper. PnB Rock was the only target of his attack. Other media, such as ABC, have added that the boy briefly spoke to the rapper and his girlfriend, demanding they give him their valuables.
Witnesses told TMZ that the assailant did not aim at anyone else, despite the place being full of people.
As the rapper was left lying on the ground, the other customers panicked. This made it easier for the assailant to escape.
Before fleeing the scene, he allegedly took all the jewelry that PnB Rock was wearing. According to TMZ, police considered the jewels as the motive for the murder from the very beginning.
Hours before the attack, PnB Rock had shared a video on social media, showing off his silver and diamond chains. Police assumed that the killer had seen the video and sought out the robber to get his jewelry. It is possible, therefore, that Freddie Lee Trone and his son had seen PnB Rock's jewelry on social media before deciding to rob him.
After he shared the video, his girlfriend Stephanie Sibounheuang allegedly posted a photo showing what they were eating in the restaurant. The image had a geolocator activated, which may have allowed the attacker to easily locate the couple.
Although Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles owns several franchises in Los Angeles, the attacker and his father encountered the couple at the Manchester Boulevard location in Inglewood.
The store's security cameras may have helped locate the attacker, his father, and the runaway car.
TMZ released a video showing the rapper on the ground, still alive, after the shooting.
In fact, PnB Rock was taken to the hospital still alive. Yet, 45 minutes after the incident, the young rapper would be pronounced dead.
Rakim Allen, his real name, was 30 years old. Although he was born in Philadelphia, he was based in Los Angeles.
After releasing his mixtape in the summer of 2014, he signed a deal with Atlantic Records a year later, and since then his notoriety and relevance grew quickly.
He collaborated with artists like Ed Sheeran, Chance the Rapper, Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz, Kodak Black, and Young Thug.
PnB Rock joins a long and disturbing list of rappers killed in recent months. Among them are JayDaYoungan, Trouble, and Big L.
