The state of the world back in 1997

On November 19, 1997, the now-classic movie 'Titanic' was released. It became not only the best box office movie of the year but also won 11 Oscars out of 14 nominations. The blockbuster marked the end of a difficult and moving year. What do you remember from 1997?

Princess Diana

The most shocking and tragic event of all was the death of Princess Diana. On August 31, the princess and her partner, Dodi Al Fayed, passed away in a terrible car accident in Paris.

Fashion Icon

Lady Diana was a style icon. In fact, that summer, she had been an absolute sensation with her thigh-high bathing suits. They had become THE fashion trend of the summer.

The people's princess

Six million brits said goodbye to Lady Di, along with her children, Prince Harry and Prince William.

Elton John

The British singer and intimate friend of Diana became one of the protagonists of the year thanks to the song he dedicated to Diana at her funeral. The song 'Candle in the Wind' was originally written for Marilyn Monroe, but the artist adapted it for his friend.

Hanson

Another music force reigned in 1997 and that was the Hanson Brothers group. Their song 'MMMBop!' was an absolute hit.

Backstreet Boys

However, nothing could beat the kings of pop of that year… The young Backstreet Boys were at the top of the charts with their song 'Quit Playing Games'.

Spice Girls

As for the girl bands, the Spice Girls ruled the world. In 1997, 'Say you'll be there' was their most famous single.

Michael Jackson

In May of that year, the sixth album of Michael Jackson, 'Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix' was released and sold more than 15 million copies.

OK Computer

Just one day after that, Radiohead launched its iconic album in Japan. 'OK Computer' is said to be one of the best albums in history.

Oasis

And in the summer, the Gallaghers and company enchanted us with their third album 'Be Here Now', with hits like 'Stand by Me' and 'All Around the World'.

The 42nd edition of Eurovision

Dublin (Ireland) was the city in charge of celebrating the Eurovision Song Contest of 1997. Katrina & The Waves from the UK won with their song 'Love Shine a Light'.

The Fifth Element

Films like 'The Game', 'Contact', 'As Good as It Gets', and 'Good Will Hunting' were total blockbusters. Milla Jovovich (image) in 'The Fifth Element' became a cult muse.

SJP before Carrie Bradshaw

A year before becoming the famous Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex and the City,' Sarah Jessica Parker made sure everyone knew she was a fashion icon. Her pink slip dress for the Vogue Fashion Awards of that year was a statement piece.

The Olsen twins

In 1997, the Olsen twins were 11, and, believe it or not, were the 'It girls' of the moment. Their outfits were recognizable all around the world.

South Park

It was also the year the first episode of 'South Park' aired. No one could imagine that this controversial series would last for that long. In the picture, we see its creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Pokémon

On April 1, 1997, the first episode of one of the most famous anime series in the entire world aired in Japan. 'Pokémon' is still a massive phenomenon. In the picture, we can see one of its co-creators, Tsunekazu Ishihara, along with the famous Pikachu.

Cindy Crawford and the Athleisure look

The supermodel combined a crop top with some leggings and created the Athleisure look, a trend that 25 years later is still in style thanks to, among others, Crawford's daughter, the model Kaia Gerber.

Kate Moss

However, the undeniable queen of all queens in the fashion industry in 1997 was Kate Moss. The model was stunning on and off the runway.

Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow

It was also in the turbulent year of 1997 when the golden Hollywood couple of Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow broke up. The actress would later confess in an interview for 'Goop' that she hadn't been ready for such a commitment. She was 22 and Pitt was 29.

Bill Clinton

At the beginning of the year, Bill Clinton celebrated his second inauguration as president of the United States. He had won the election against the republican candidate, Bob Dole, by 379 to 159 votes. Popular votes were actually really close: 49,2% for Clinton and 40,7% for Dole.

Tony Blair

At almost 44, Tony Blair became the youngest Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in nearly two centuries. He surpassed John Major and gave back the power to the Labour Party, after 18 years of Conservative rule.
