British royals in the past year: the most important photos
In the first year since Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's death, the royal family has certainly been through soaring highs and... some more sticky situations.
We have seen a royal family in transition, with King Charles taking the reins of the British monarchy, providing us with some of the most historical photos of our time.
Of course, we have also had Harry and Meghan's media tour of revealing the family's secrets and inner rifts. We take a look at the most memorable royal moments of 2023... in photos.
The Prince and Princess of Wales released their Christmas card photo, provided by Kensington Palace, and taken by the photographer Josh Shinner earlier this year in Windsor. The couple posed with their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, with the vibe of this year's photo taking on a more glamorous and professional look than the previous years. Taking it up a notch!
The Royal Variety performance was held on the 30th of November 2023. Prince William and Princess Catherine attended the event that has been going on since 1912, supporting the Royal Variety Charity, which supports members of the entertainment industry with a nationwide grants scheme. They shared a loving look as they arrived.
This year, the future King and his wife had visitors! They were joined at the Royal Albert Hall by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden.
On the 29th of November, it was the Anti-Slavery Collective’s inaugural Winter Gala. Princess Eugenie co-founded the charity in 2017 with her long-time friend Julia de Boinville. The aim is to bring awareness and abolish modern slavery globally; Eugenie and Julia estimate that around 50 million people are in modern slavery today.
There was a pretty impressive guest list, including pop stars /and a private performance from Ed Sheeran) and even an ex-prime minister. But the important guests for the Princess were her family. She was joined by sister Princess Beatrice and mum Sarah, Duchess of York at the event, all looking coordinated in black.
Prince William went on a four-day visit to Singapore. The future King wanted to shine a light on his Earthshot Awards which focus on environmental issues. We particularly love this photo of him on the Green Carpet alongside English actress and singer, Hannah Waddingham.
Never afraid to get stuck in, the Prince and Princess of Wales always take the opportunities to take part in some kind of sport. Here, Prince William joined a dragon boat race before the glamour of the Earthshot prize ceremony the following day.
King Charles, crowned this year, delivered his first King's Speech at the State Opening of Parliament on the 7th of November. He was wearing the Imperial State Crown and did a fine job.
On November 3, King Charles and Queen Camilla traveled to Kenya. The focus was to acknowledge "painful aspects" of the history of the relationship between Britain and a former colony. “The wrongdoings of the past are a cause of the greatest sorrow and the deepest regret,” the King said on the first night of their visit.
Princess Beatrice of York and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi attended the Art of Wishes Gala 2023 at Raffles on October 9th. A spectacular place to hold a well-deserved event and Beatrice proved why, once again, she is well-known for her fashion choices.
The King and Queen Consort have had a number of successful visits in the second half of 2023. France was the destination in September and strengthened the Britain-France relationship. The trip was actually postponed in March due to the protests in France at the time.
The trip was a success, but the most memorable moment for many was watching Queen Camilla showing off her skills at ping pong. In fact, King Charles and Brigitte Macron also appeared to be remarkably impressed.
The Invictus Games got a fair bit of media. And not just for Meghan Markle's wardrobe. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex went through a busy schedule over the days of the games. Initiated in 2014 by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games were held in Germany for the first time in September 2023.
Needless to say, the media were watching their every move. The event was a great success and finished with a concert filled with star performers.
Meanwhile, not far from his brother, Prince William was also attracting the press, but for very different reasons. He journeyed with his wife, Princess Catherine, to pay homage to the late Queen Elizabeth, a year after her death, at St David's Cathedral in Wales.
King Charles invited President Joe Biden to Windsor Castle in July 2023. He was the first president to officially visit during his reign.
Before that, however, it was Wimbledon! The Wales family was very much the center of attention as they watched a number of games. A memorable moment was when the Princess of Wales and Roger Federer had a good old chat before playing tennis on the No.3 Court at The All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Royal Ascot would not be Royal Ascot without... The Royals. It is most certainly an event to showcase color, patterns, and, of course, hats! Here is Princess Catherine looking elegant in a bold red.
One of our favorite shots of the event was this one, showing the King and Queen alongside Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh and sister-in-law to Charles. Obviously, something has taken them aback!
His first as King, Trooping the Colour - the traditional parade held to mark the British Sovereign's official birthday - was on 17th June. The Royals were out in full splendour and colour, celebrating the occasion with hundreds of thousands in the crowd.
Of course, it was a perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of the cheeky Wales children in public. Whether over-excited, tired, or genuinely interested in what's going on, they never fail to give us some good stills!
2023 saw a Royal Wedding! Not the British Royal Family, mind you, but even so, the British Royals were in attendance. William and Catherine joined the nuptials on 1 June 2023. At Zahran Palace Jordan's Crown Prince Hussein married Rajwa Al Saif.
Meghan was prominent in the media again in May. She visited New York City, accompanied by Prince Harry and her mom, Doria to accept a 'Women of Vision' award from the Ms. Foundation.
But sadly, perhaps the most memorable moment of that appearance was Harry and Meghan's taxi journey after the event had finished. The couple (and Doria) got in a yellow New York taxi cab and, followed by paparazzi, ended. up in a 'near catastrophic car chase'.
Perhaps the biggest event of the year. Seeing William and Harry close together(!). On the 6th May Prince Charles became King and Camilla became Queen Consort. Officially.
The photos in general of the event were pretty impressive. Gold, adornments, rows and rows of people, and, of course, a lot of pomp and circumstance!
We can't forget the children. This was when Prince Louis absolutely cemented himself in the hearts of the people around the world.
The day before the coronation, King Charles, Prince William, and Catherine, the Princess of Wales greeted those who had been camped out on the Mall. Half of the best photos of the event are those of the public in their British finery!
The King and Queen Consort went on their first State Visit of Charles's reign. They traveled to Germany on a three-day trip in March and were greeted by well-wishers... wearing Burger King crowns.
Special mention here has to be made for Queen Camilla, who wore a stunning gown and looked fabulous. She went on to re-wear this gown in 2023, really advocating sustainable and reusable fashion.
The first big outing for the Royals was Commonwealth Day. It aims “to unite 2.5 billion Commonwealth citizens in celebration of their shared values and principles, and in pursuit of a common future, centered on sustainability and peace” as The Commonwealth website tells us.
The annual celebration honoring the best national and foreign films was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London's Southbank Centre on Sunday 19th February. Prince William and Princess Kate arrived and pretty much stole the show before it had even begun!
Harry kicked off the year in a rather spectacular fashion. He released his memoir ‘Spare’ to the world and made sure everyone knew about it.
Previously to the release, Harry had gone on a media tour to give snippets and create hype around the contents of the book. To say it received ‘mixed reactions’ is an understatement. Yet, it has been the fastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began in 1998.
