They are actors, they are actresses; they are famous and well known - but before being all that, they had a very different kind of job: representing their homeland.

Gal Gadot

Adam Driver

Adam Driver was about to turn 18 at the time of 9/11, which inspired him to join the US Marine Corps, where he spent nearly three years assigned to the Infantry. A brutal cycling accident resulted in breaking his sternum and forced him to leave the Corps and the Iraq war.

Shirley Temple

The young child actress served, from 1943, as captain of the First Motion Picture Unit of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. Her job was to produce training and propaganda films for the US military.

Clint Eastwood

In 1951, at the age of 21, Clint Eastwood was drafted into the US Army and stationed at Fort Ord, California, in the midst of the Korean War. He worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor during his time in the army.

Paul Newman

Between 1943 and 1945, Paul Newman enlisted in the US Navy in the midst of World War II. He was stationed at bases in Okinawa and Guam.

Cynthia Rothrock

The actress became a captain in the US Army Reserve in the early 1970s.

Mr. T (Laurence Tureaud)

In 1975, Mr. T, at the age of 23, enlisted in the US Army to serve in the Military Police Corps. He became a squad leader and was awarded 'Top Trainee of the Cycle' in a class of over 6,000 troops.

Tom Selleck

Before achieving Hollywood glory, Tom Selleck served in the California National Guard and in the army during the Watts Riots in 1965.

Sondra Locke

The actress served as a first sergeant in the US Army at the height of the Vietnam War. She also worked as a medical clerk for the troops.

Harvey Keitel

In 1956, Harvey Keitel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, participating in the conflict in Lebanon.

Chuck Norris

He was 18 years old when he joined the U.S. Air Force as a Military Policeman and was sent to Osan Air Base, South Korea. Upon his return to the United States, he continued to serve as a guard at March Joint Air Reserve Base until graduating in August 1962.

Leonard Nimoy

In the late 1940s, Leonard Nimoy served in the US Army for two years, long enough to reach the rank of sergeant.

Clark Gable

In August 1942, after the death of his wife, Carole Lombard, the actor enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he volunteered and trained in aerial gunnery.

Michael Caine

Michael Caine was drafted into the British Army and deployed to the Korean War, where he joined the Royal Fusiliers and he fought in combat.

Christopher Lee

At the height of World War II, Christopher Lee served for five years in the British Army's Royal Air Force, where he was stationed in North Africa, Sicily and mainland Italy. He was also assigned to special operations and intelligence. He retired at the rank of Flight Lieutenant.

Morgan Freeman

In 1955, at the age of 18, he turned down a partial scholarship from Jackson State University, Mississippi, to join the US Army Air Force as a mechanic, as his dream was to fly and pilot. He spent four years in the Army.

Kirk Douglas

In 1942 this actor joined the US Navy, was called up for military service, and joined the Marine Corps at Notre Dame University, graduating as an ensign. Soon after, he was assigned to Anti-Submarine Unit 1129 in the Pacific Ocean, where he spent two years as a telecommunications officer. He graduated with honours.

Sean Connery

At the age of just 16, he enlisted in the British Royal Navy, where he served for three years but was discharged because of a duodenal ulcer, a hereditary condition that affected many boys in his family.

Steve McQueen

In 1947, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Marines and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He remained there for five years until he decided to change his profession to acting.
