We were once again reminded of the passage of time when Malia Obama, the former president's eldest daughter, appeared at the 2024 Sundance Awards.

Sasha and Malia Obama, the daughters of former U.S. President Barack Obama, are not little girls anymore. Both are in their twenties and have come a long way since the moment we met them as the Senator and President's daughters.

Malia and Sasha Obama were two cuddly girls caught in the whirlwind of their father's political career in 2004. Senator Barack Obama from Illinois began this run for president of the United States around that time.

The sisters became celebrities overnight when their father won the 2008 presidential election and brought his family to the White House for the next eight years.

In the past years, the famous sisters have been busy with studies and work, and they tend to live a quiet life. But sometimes Malia and Sasha draw the attention of the media with their typical twentysomething behaviors or social activism. Their father, meanwhile, also likes to talk proudly about the young women in his podcasts or other media appearances.

Sasha (2001) graduated with a degree in Sociology in May 2023. We could see her have fun on campus and on social media as she was studying. Malia (1998), the eldest and tallest of the two, went to Harvard from 2017 to 2021.

As a college student, Sasha liked to party as many people of her age do. Being the former president's daughter does not change that. What's different, though, is that the media follow her and her elder sister quite closely and critically.

While in college, Sasha made the news when a video appeared on TikTok of her and a group of friends. It was at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The students were with quite a group, dancing close together, and not wearing masks: it was a bit scandalous, but commenters also praised the famous student for celebrating life.

Sasha graduated from the Sidwell Friends Institute at age 17. It was the same school that her sister went to. But for college, she picked a different school from her sister and father: not Harvard, where Malia did her undergrad and Barack his law studies, but the University of Michigan.

UMich was a remarkable choice for the famous student, as it is not even an Ivy League university, like Princeton or Columbia where her mother and father graduated. For her final year, Sasha transferred to the University of Southern California. She is said to take her own route in life and not to follow in her parents' footsteps.

Less in the spotlights than her elder sister Malia, Sasha tries to stay far away from the media. As you can see in the photo, bodyguards help her with that.

Just like her sister, Sasha Obama transformed into a real 'it girl.' Her style, hairdos, and even her poses in front of the camera generate reactions ranging from praise to jealousy.

Sasha Obama tries to manage her fame as well as she can. "Imagine having your first kiss or smoking," said her mother, Michelle Obama, in Conan O'Brien's podcast, "and seeing it on photos in the media."

"Sasha and Malia have had to develop a resilience to go out and not be resentful of some of the nastiness out there. I am in awe of my children for the way they have managed this whole thing with poise and grace," Michelle Obama said.

The eldest of the Obama daughters, Malia, became a Harvard University student at age 18. Like her younger sister, she liked to relax with friends, have a drink at a pool, or go out in a bar.

As a student, Malia was often photographed with Rory Farquharson, the son of a rich British investor and law student. In March 2020, 'Globe' reported that Malia broke up with Farquharson, but in December 2020, Barack Obama confirmed that Malia had a boyfriend and that he was British. They spent the covid lockdown together at the Obama family residence.

Barack Obama was very open about his daughter's boyfriend, especially because the young man was forced to spend a lot of time with the Obamas due to the coronavirus pandemic. Talking about the games he played with his daughters during the lockdown, he referred to "Malia's boyfriend who was with us for a little while."

"He's British ... wonderful young man, and he was sort of stuck because there was a whole visa thing and he had a job set up," Obama told Bill Simmons in his podcast, cited by Harpers Bazaar. "So we took him in and I didn't want to like him, but he's a good kid."

"The only thing you discover, and this is not a surprise to you Bill, because you've got a son," he told Bill Simmons, "young men eat. It's weird to watch them consume food. My grocery bill went up about 30%."

After graduation in 2021, Page Six reported that Malia and Rory were no longer together. The paparazzi kept following her while she went on dates with other men, out partying into the early morning, or smoking.

Seeing how Malia is pursued by the media, other presidents' daughters come to her defense. "Malia's life should not be your clickbait," Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea writes. "Be better."

Ivanka Trump says that Malia should enjoy "the same privacy as her fellow students. She is a young woman and a private citizen, whose boundaries we should respect."

Not all is a party in the life of Malia Obama. Just like her parents and sister, she is often seen helping out with benefits and showing her solidarity with social minorities. Malia and Sasha were both involved in Black Lives Matter protests over the summer of 2020.

Those who know Malia Obama well, say that she is very concerned about the future of her country. At some point during Donald Trump's presidency, she expressed her disagreement with him on Facebook.

Malia used a pseudonym to make her comments on Facebook. "Donald Trump is the president. This is not normal," she said. "Donald Trump is evil. Don't be complacent."

Messages like this, as well as the similarities between Malia and her father, cause many to think that there may be a future in politics for her. Will Malia follow in the footsteps of her father?

Maybe not. Lately, Malia Obama has been drawn more to the world of entertainment. She showed it when she appeared in a music video by the rock band New Dakotas. In the video, she plays harmonica, dances, and even sings a few notes.

Malia also joined Donald Glover's writing team for the series 'Swarm' (2023) about a music fan who is obsessed with a star resembling Beyoncé. She's in the credits of the series with the name 'Malia Ann'.

Both Malia and Sasha Obama are two accomplished young women who undoubtedly have great careers and lives ahead of them. Perhaps in the media, or maybe in the White House. Who knows?
