The images of Kate Middleton's reappearance
In mid-January, Princess Kate disappeared from public life after it was announced that she had to undergo "abdominal surgery." Since then, everything has been speculation, and a recent manipulated photo made things worse.
On Mother's Day 2024, in March, a family photo with a smiling and happy Kate was released by the British Royal House. It was the first new photo of the princess since January. However, something was off...
Experts in the press agencies and social media users immediately pointed out that it was a manipulated image. Rather than a normal photo from the Royal House, the image became a piece of evidence of manipulation. Press agencies even pulled it from circulation because they did not deem it reliable.
Amid the media storm, an official reaction appeared on the same account where the photo had been posted. Princess Catherine, signing off with 'C', admitted she had experimented with some Photoshop.
Because of the unusual nature of the photo and the comment - Why would a princess occupy herself with Photoshop? - doubts about Kate Middleton only increased.
The Sun and TMZ published a video (with The Sun dedicating its cover to it on March 19) in which Kate Middleton is seen with her husband. She walks smiling and the images were captured in a farm store in Windsor, according to the newspaper.
As the video of William and Catherine was quite blurry and there are no signs to date it, several critics claim that it may have been taken earlier, falsified with AI, or that it featured a different woman altogether.
An example is the account theshamingofjay / X, incorporating the video from TMZ
It doesn't seem like a coincidence that The Sun premiered the video of Princess Kate. It has distinguished itself from other media in defending the Princess of Wales against harassment on social media.
In reaction to the thousands of conspiracy theories about Princess Catherine on social media, The Sun published a front-page headlining "Lay Off Kate" and advocating more respect for the privacy of the royal.
The Princess of Wales being out of public life for medical reasons would not be a problem in and of itself, but the way in which that absence has been managed by the palace's PR team is what set off alarm bells. There has been little clear information about her condition, a manipulated image was released, and Prince William was inexplicably absent from an important event.
While there was growing uncertainty about Catherine's health, William was absent from the funeral of Constantine of Greece held in Windsor on February 27, 2024. Queen consort Camilla had to replace him.
According to The Independent, Prince William explained his non-attendance at Constantine's funeral as "a private matter." That vague expression triggered speculation: was Kate very sick? Or, perhaps, his father who's been treated for prostate cancer?
The overwhelming attention to Kate's Mother's Day photo and its interventions have led to scrutiny of more images released by the royal family. Media experts and social media commenters are now also focusing on another photo supposedly taken by the Princess of Wales: Queen Elizabeth's 2022 group portrait with her great-grandchildren.
Meanwhile, The Sun now shows us Kate Middleton in perfect health... if you have complete faith in the released video.
Yet, due to the odd communication style of the Royal Family, questions remain. Why doesn't she appear at any public event? And why doesn't she appear in a video or image distributed institutionally from the Royal House?
The Daily Mirror reports that a team of assistants is working "round the clock" to prepare Princess Kate's official return to public life.
The same newspaper points out that there is allegedly some pressure on the princess to appear at the traditional Eastern Sunday service on March 31. The Royal Family attends it every year.
