The Niftie Fifties

When many people think of "the good old days," their daydreams drift back to the 1950s. It was a time of relatively affluence for many in the aftermath of hard times like the world wars and depression. But for some, this decade is far more than a fantasy...

Meet Misty Snow

Misty Snow is a head-to-toe, wall-to-wall 1950s throwback. And it’s more than aesthetic.

A "domestic engineer"

In her Instagram bio, she calls herself a domestic engineer, referring to the fact that she is in charge of household tasks, just like women were in the 1950s. But this time, it’s totally her choice.

“Idolizes the mothers of the 50s and 60s”

The Daily Mail reports that she got married in 2005, and has one kid who is now an adult. According to the British paper, she loves being a housewife and “idolizes the mothers of the 50s and 60s who kept their houses and themselves looking beautiful at all times.”

A serious collector of 1950s items

The same year she got married, she started seriously collecting vintage items from the 50s. She started nabbing classic items that she remembered from her grandma’s house as soon as she could, according to the Daily Mail.

And she uses it

Not only are her collectibles neat, but they are also practical. “Yup I do use all my vintage because that’s all I have,” she posted on Instagram.

Loves looking good, for the most part

One of the points of the 1950s that is not so common in homes today is having women dressed up, with polished hair and makeup indoors. She embraces it and loves showing off her looks.

“Getting ready takes all day”

She admits that she doesn’t always look perfect. When she’s not looking polished, she writes that you can often find her in hair rollers without (gasp) lipstick or a t-shirt! “Getting ready takes all day,” she joked.

A massive Pyrex collection

Of course, she is a big fan of the iconic brand of kitchenware Pyrex, whose pieces often feature extremely funky patterns and hold up over the years. According to the Daily Mail, she had 400 pieces at the peak of her collection.

But she sized down

The Daily Mail reports that when she moved from New York State to Nashville, she realized she needed to downsize. To make her life even more “authentic 1950s” she would get by with one or two of each item, as opposed to several items of each.

She does not go to the store in sweatpants

The Daily Mail reports that she sometimes sees people looking at her funny or trying to sneakily take photos. However, she loves the 50s because “people took pride in how they looked and didn’t go to the shops in sweatpants.”

The granny ranch

In Nashville, she moved into this charming mid-century home in Nashville that she has dubbed “the granny ranch.” While not from the 50s, it is from the 60s.

Her harvest gold kitchen

Yes, this kitchen is a perfect representation of the trends of the era. The patterns, the colors, and even the appliances seem original. Some people would hate it, but Misty says why follow trends when the one is perfectly splendid and lights up her heart!

A pink laundry room

Yes, why not, the laundry room is pretty in pink, from the carpet to the walls. “The prettiest laundry room I have ever seen,” said one of her Instagram followers.

The living room

Her living room seems rather minimal, but everything there is well thought out and has a history to tell. This style has come back in vogue in recent years.

Yes, she sews

If you are wondering how some of her great clothes are made... Sometimes in the same fabric as decor like curtains, yes, she sews… an art that is increasingly rare in the modern age.

Celebrating her anniversary in Nashville

In 2020, she celebrated her first anniversary in Nashville, where she relocated with her kid, cat, and plants. She is photographed at an iconic place in the city wearing her equally iconic clothing.

"Always add marshmallows"

Even the food she eats is very 1950s. Here she shares a pink fruit salad in a big pink Tupperware mix. “Always add marshmallows,” she captioned the post.

Vintage groceries

Of course, she also gravitates toward vintage household items like Brillo pads and Scott Cut Rite wax paper.

Her daughter takes inspo

In 2018, she shared a picture of her daughter who was looking “perfectly 50s” at her junior prom. The photo was taken in her old kitchen before moving to the granny ranch.

Even her cat is quirky

Yes, her cat can often be seen standing on its hind legs in many of her pics. Good thing she found a gigantic poodle bank to match its pose!
