Travel: How much does a coffee cost in different European capitals?
Latte, cappuccino, americano, espresso... Even the best coffees can leave a bad taste in your mouth once you've got the bill. Do you want to see the proof?
The German magazine Travelbook has unraveled the mystery of how much it costs to drink a cup of coffee in Europe. It ranks 42 cities, based on around 400 menus, to show which European capital is most expensive or cheap when it comes to a cup of joe.
Spoiler: despite its famous coffee scene, the cheapest country to have a coffee at the bar is not Italy!

4 euros is the average cost of a coffee in the Danish capital, a price that places it at the top of the ranking of the most expensive cities in Europe for coffee lovers.

Having a coffee in the Swiss city costs an average of €3.96.

From Switzerland to Iceland: the average price of a cup of coffee in the country's capital is €3.16.

According to the Espresso-Index of the German Travelbook magazine, in Brussels you pay, on average, €2.49 for a coffee.
The receipt for a coffee in the Estonian capital will be €2.21.

In the charming Irish capital, an espresso, on average, costs €2.20.
10 cents cheaper than in the Irish capital: in Riga, a coffee costs €2.10.
At this point in the list, the price of a coffee finally goes below two euros. In the Czech capital, you pay €1.99 on average.
The capital of Spain is 19th in the ranking, with €1.93 for an espresso (on average).

Taking an espresso in Bratislava costs on average €1.90.
A cup of coffee in the German capital costs €1.85.
The Lithuanian capital, famous for its Baroque architecture, is not the cheapest when it comes to coffee: here the average price is €1.80.
In open-air bars on the banks of the Ljubljanica River, you'll spend an average of €1.63 for a cup of coffee.

The average price of a coffee in the Portuguese capital is a little over one euro. €1.13 to be exact.
Are you in the Eternal City? If you want a coffee, you will have to pay an average of €1.12 (and it's not even the most expensive Italian city).
The 23,000 inhabitants of the Principality of Andorra and the numerous tourists of this wonderful area of the Pyrenees have to pay, on average, €1.10 for an espresso.
From one microstate to another, the average price of a coffee changes little. In the capital of San Marino, it costs €0.98.

The prices shown by the German magazine are average prices, which means that, most likely, in some of these cities you could drink a coffee without having to spend these amounts... or, perhaps, your bill could be even higher. In any case, the most important thing is that the coffee is good.
