What are 'Barbiecore' and 'Girl Dinner'? Surprising words added to the dictionary in 2024
So far in 2024, 1,700 new words have been added to the dictionary. The updates were made to align with current online trends. They address health, well-being, social issues, anxieties related to climate change, and economic concerns. As serious as it all sounds, there are a few that were added that were surprising and some are just laugh-out-loud funny.
John Kelly, vice president of editorial at Dictionary-com, said in a statement that the additions always reflect the 'ever-changing society' and that the additions of new words, especially those made popular online have the power to "shape thoughts' and 'bridge gaps".
"Our semi-annual New Words announcement is meant to support a greater understanding of where language is, where it might go next—and why the constantly expanding universe of words matters for our everyday lives," he continued.
Take a look at a few of those words - some are particularly entertaining!
