Where has Matthew Gray Gubler been since 'Criminal Minds'?

A fresh-faced Matthew Gray Gubler started on ‘Criminal Minds’ at 25, virtually unknown, with a rather dubious role: Dr. Spencer Reid.

Fast forward 15 seasons and 323 episodes to CBS pulling the plug on the show in 2020, leaving Gubler, now a dashing 40, an established star and the undeniable fan-favorite of ‘Criminal Minds.’

So, now the million-dollar question: What’s Matthew Gray Gubler been doing since his star-making stint on the show? In a nutshell, he’s been keeping himself busy.

Interestingly, one of the things Matthew Gray Gubler has done since ‘Criminal Minds’ ended was saying no to ‘Criminal Minds’.

The show was unexpectedly revived under the name ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution,’ but it couldn’t get one of its big stars back because he was already committed elsewhere. His co-star Daniel Henney was in the same boat.

What exactly lured him away from the show that shot him to fame? First off, there was ‘Horse Girl’, the psychological drama written by and starring Alison Brie.

In this film, Matthew Gray Gubler played Darren Colt, a character from a TV show that Sarah, the main character, is a huge fan of.

Gubler was all in for the movie, even snagging a ‘Horse Girl’ coaster from the wrap party and flaunting it on Instagram.

Also in 2020, Matthew Gray Gubler starred in the music video ‘Moonlight’ by the synthpop band ‘Future Island.’ He’s paired up with actress Callie Hernandez, playing a couple going through a rough breakup.

He even found the time to star in ‘Beginner’s Luck,’ a charming short about an amateur bowling team that scores an unexpected championship win. It’s his closest role to Dr. Reid since he left ‘Criminal Minds.’

In between his creative sprees, Gubler also managed to keep his YouTube channel up to date. It’s super entertaining and highly recommended.

Lately, his most notable role has been Wes, the love interest of Kat Dennings on ‘Dollface’. He’s a vet who the lead character has an on-and-off relationship with.

In his downtime from ‘Dollface,’ Gubler showed off his love for the quirky and unique, starring in the 2021 film ‘King Knight’.

The movie explores a couple at the helm of a modern witch coven grappling with a surprise revelation about one of their own.

But if there’s one thing Gubler’s really devoted his time to, it’s his eccentric art. His Halloween-esque sketches, paintings, and collages frequently grace his Instagram page.

Naturally, his artistic activity has skyrocketed since ‘Criminal Minds’ ended, and his Instagram profile is practically an abstract and dark art gallery featuring everything from tributes to moms to Nicolas Cage homages.

Oh yes, Gubler’s also managed to whip up children’s books. His debut, ‘Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging and Being Yourself,’ was released while ‘Criminal Minds’ was still on the air in 2019.

The book, with autobiographical undertones, follows a monster who lives underground for fear of being considered strange and different.

This tale turned out to be a winner, hitting number 1 on ‘The New York Times’ best seller list, clearly winning the hearts of both kids and adults.

By the end of 2022, with the holiday season in sight, Gubler dropped a line of plush toys based on the book’s characters. Just like the book, they were a hit.

Of course, a sequel was to be expected, and it’s coming.’ The Little Kid with Green Hands’ is set for a September 2023 release, and it’s already got bestseller written all over it.
