Tragedy off the Sicilian coast

The British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian was wrecked off the coast of Sicily after a severe storm in the early hours of Monday 19 August. Of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued, while six people, including prominent figures, have been found dead or are still missing, according to the BBC.

Rescue and survivors

Among the survivors are nine crew members, Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, and a British mother, Charlotte Golunski, along with her one-year-old daughter, WIRED reported.

Ongoing investigation

Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the shipwreck, as the Bayesian yacht was the only one to sink during the storm, while other vessels nearby were able to assist the yacht, according to WIRED.

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch

Among the victims is Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur known as the ‘British Bill Gates’. Lynch, 59, made his fortune by selling his software company Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, according to the BBC.

Charges of fraud in 2011

Lynch was in court in 2011 on charges of fraud and conspiracy for allegedly planning to inflate the company’s value before it was sold. He was acquitted of all 15 charges by a jury in San Francisco in June.

Hannah Lynch, the missing daughter

Hannah Lynch, 18, the youngest daughter of Mike Lynch, is still missing after the shipwreck. She had recently been accepted to study English at Oxford University, according to The Times.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and insurer Hiscox, was among those killed. The 70-year-old Briton had been a witness at Lynch's recent trial, according to the Financial Times.

Judy Bloomer

Judy Bloomer, wife of Jonathan Bloomer, also died in the wreck. Judy was a trustee of the charity Eve Appeal, which focuses on gynaecological cancer research, the BBC reported.

Chris Morvillo, Lynch's lawyer

Chris Morvillo, an American lawyer who represented Mike Lynch at his trial in the US, also lost his life in the wreck. Morvillo had worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York, explains the BBC.

Neda Morvillo, jewellery designer

Neda Morvillo, wife of Chris Morvillo, was another victim of the tragic accident. Neda was a prominent jewellery designer in New York under the name Neda Nassiri.

Chef Recaldo Thomas

Recaldo Thomas, the chef of the yacht Bayesian, was the first body found after the sinking. The chef, a French national, was one of the confirmed fatalities in the early hours, according to the BBC.
