Life starts with the seeds of your food!

You may be in the habit of throwing away the seeds and pits of your fruits and vegetables when cooking, without really paying attention to them. However, did you know that they are full of life, and can transform into beautiful plants, or even fruit trees?

Know how to take advantage of pits and seeds

Almost all kernels, pips, legumes, and cereal seeds can germinate and develop roots. Read further to learn the right techniques to grow plants from them.

The ideal season

Ideally, it is best to begin this process in spring or summer, as all seeds need light, warmth, and moisture to germinate. In winter, you may need a grow light to compensate for the fewer hours of light on the plant.

Seeds from biological foods are the best

The seeds of citrus fruits, tomatoes, zucchini, grapes, pears, apples, pumpkins, the pits of apricots, avocados, cherries, or even exotic fruits... All of them will give you magnificent plants if you are diligent and have enough patience. To put all the chances on your side, choose the kernels or seeds of organic varieties. The less fruits and vegetables have been treated and processed, the more easily their seeds will germinate.

Several ways to do it

There are several techniques for growing plants from pits, seeds, and legumes. The first is to germinate them on damp cotton or immersed in water before replanting the young shoots in potting soil. Don't plant the tiny plants until the roots have developed. Another way to grow from seeds is to plant them directly in moist potting soil.

Tips for different types of plants

The techniques differ for the type of seed you want to germinate. Let's discover some examples and gardening tips together!

Sprouting an avocado pit

Remove the pit from your avocado and clean it. Insert four toothpicks halfway up and right in the middle of the core. The result has to be that the avocado is 1/3 immersed in a glass of water.

Only 1/3 in the water

Change the water every 2 days. After six to eight weeks, the core will crack and roots will begin to appear. Once the roots are a few centimeters long, carefully take them along with the core and place them in moist potting soil. Water the plant regularly.

Sprouting lentils

Soak the lentil seeds in a glass of water for about twelve hours. Place cotton in the bottom of a glass jar and wet it. Spread the seeds on the cotton in a spaced manner. After just two or three days, your lentils will germinate. Wait seven more days to see young shoots, which you can then replant.

Sprouting lemon seeds

Collect the seeds from a lemon. Clean them and let them soak in a glass of water for a day or two. Then wrap the seeds in damp cotton and place them in an airtight bag. Store the sachet in a warm place and wait a few weeks. When you see a root of a few centimeters, you can replant the seeds in potting soil. With some patience, the lemon tree could show up!

Germinating a lychee stone

Take several lychee stones and keep the smoothest ones. Remove the flesh from the fruit and let the stones soak for two days in a glass of water.

Take care how to put the seeds in the ground

Plant several cores in moist potting soil, rounded side up, and let them protrude a few millimeters. After two weeks, you should see small leaves and a root appear. Replant them, water them regularly, and a new lychee plant could come out!
