Have Karla Sofía Gascón's controversial comments ruined her chances at the Oscars?
When 'Emilia Pérez' received 13 Oscar nominations and Karla Sofía Gascón was nominated for Best Actress, everyone knew that the race for the statuette was going to be full of obstacles.
The Spanish actress is the first trans actress to be nominated for an Oscar and it seemed clear that her path to the statuette would not be easy, but no one thought that her worst enemy would be herself.
Although Karla Sofía Gascón deleted a good part of her old and controversial tweets, the writer and screenwriter Sarah Hagi was able to recover some of them, dated between 2016 and 2021.
A dozen tweets, each one more racist than the last, with particular hatred towards Islam, Muslims, and Moroccans living in Spain. "I’m Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more Muslims in Spain?" is one of the mildest.
"Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more girls with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Maybe next year, instead of English, we have to teach Arabic... and a lamb," said another.
But her compilation of tweets was not limited to the Muslim community in Spain. The Covid vaccine, George Floyd, and the Oscars themselves all had their share of hate from Karla Sofía Gascón, as reported by 'Variety'.
"The Chinese vaccine, apart from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a cat that moves its hand, 2 plastic flowers, a pop-up lantern, 3 telephone lines, and one euro for your first controlled purchase," the actress tweeted in August 2020.
"The Oscars are increasingly resembling an independent and protest film ceremony. I didn't know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a BlackLivesMatter demonstration, or the 8M. On top of that, it was an ugly gala. They forgot to give an award to my cousin's short film, which is lame," she commented about the 2021 Oscars gala, the first post-Covid.

Seeing the commotion that has been created, Karla Sofía Gascón has had no choice but to issue a statement to apologize, through Netflix. "I want to acknowledge the conversation around my posts on social media that have caused pain," the actress says in the statement.
"As a member of a marginalized community, I know suffering all too well and I deeply regret having caused pain. I have fought all my life for a better world. I believe that light will triumph over darkness," she added.
The controversy surrounding these tweets adds to the accusation that Karla Sofía Gascón made against Fernanda Torres, nominated for Best Actress for 'I'm Still Here', in an interview with the Brazilian newspaper 'Folha de Sao Paulo'.
"What I don't like is that there is a social media team working around these people trying to discredit the work of others, like mine, or that of the film because that leads nowhere," said the Spanish actress.
"At no time have I seen anyone speak badly of Fernanda Torres or the Fernanda Torres film. On the other hand, I do see many people who work in Fernanda Torres' environment who speak badly of me and of 'Emilia Pérez'."
And if 'Emilia Pérez' was lacking in controversy, the film's director, Jacques Audiard, appears, assuring that "Spanish is a language of emerging, modest countries, of poor people and migrants," in an interview given to 'Konbini', a French media outlet.
Under normal circumstances, it would be predictable that 'Emilia Perez' would leave empty-handed at the Oscars on March 3. But, of course, considering that Will Smith took home his just minutes after slapping Chris Rock, it's hard to know what will happen.
What seems obvious is that the promotional campaign of 'Emilia Pérez' and Karla Sofía Gascón for the Oscars has blown up and their fate is now in the hands of Divine Providence. In a month we will know for sure.
